Weighted Average Calculation for LNG Composition

Background

LNG composition plays a critical role in the trading and loading processes, impacting energy quality, safety, environmental considerations, and regulatory compliance. A deep understanding and effective control of LNG composition are indispensable for the successful trade and transportation of LNG.

Rather than relying on a range of values, LNG trade hinges on a specific output value, which can be either weighted or time-averaged. This emphasis on a precise value streamlines the LNG transaction during loading.

In LNG facilities equipped with multiple Gas Chromatographs on the loading line (both primary and backup), each performing different sampling modes such as Time Weighted Average (TWA) and Flow Weighted Average (FWA), it becomes essential to calculate the weighted average composition of the LNG being loaded.

Solution

This is where PI AF extends its capabilities by performing calculations based on a range of values gathered at specified time intervals as per requirements. This solution enables the provision of the crucial value (weighted or time average) necessary for facilitating LNG trading during the loading process. Users can perform calculations based on real-time parameters such as individual Gas Chromatograph outputs (e.g., N2, CI, C2, etc.), Sampling Selector (Primary vs. Backup), and Sampling Mode (TWA vs. FWA).

The average calculation contributes to the accurate determination of LNG composition for the cargo being loaded, preventing potential commercial issues by providing near-real-time values at the time of loading. This ensures a smooth and efficient LNG trading process.
