Background

Carbon sequestration stands as a pivotal strategy in mitigating climate change by capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. In the pursuit of sustainable energy generation and environmental responsibility, energy stakeholders are placing a premium on monitoring carbon emissions. In this context, Shell took a proactive stance by operating a cutting-edge carbon capture facility in Canada.

Solution

Specifically tailored for the challenge of processing heavy crudes into light crudes, Shell’s facility employs a sophisticated approach. Carbon dioxide, a byproduct of this process, is liquefied and injected into storage wells, securely sequestering it more than a mile beneath the Earth's surface. To ensure precision in monitoring CO2 levels near the well surfaces, engineers deploy advanced laser sensors. These sensors gather real-time data on gas concentrations, seamlessly feeding the information into the PI System.

The sensor data is structured in Asset Framework and is presented to Shell’s Advanced Analytics tools that performs complex calculations thereby, evaluating CO2 levels based on constantly changing factors, such as live weather conditions. Despite the intricacy of these calculations, the end-users are presented with a user-friendly dashboard interface. This interface empowers them to effortlessly monitor and visualize the CO2 footprint.
