Augmenting Hydrocarbon Accounting and GHG emission monitoring with PI

Background

Hydrocarbon accounting is a critical process in the oil and gas industry, involving the measurement, allocation, and reconciliation of hydrocarbon production and consumption. SEIPL Hazira had spreadsheet-based calculations for terminal hydrocarbon accounting and GHG emission calculations. Manual updating of the spreadsheet file on daily basis, manual report generation and additional efforts to comply with EUC (End User Compliance) requirements of spreadsheet becomes a tedious task with high probabilities of error. Hence, there was a need to automate these calculations along with better visualization to simplify the task and make better informed decisions by operators with best feasible solution in place.

Solution

The combination of the PI Asset Framework (PI AF), and Power BI significantly streamlines this complex task. The PI system acts as a central repository, collecting real-time data from diverse sources such as flow meters, sensors, and SCADA systems. PI AF organizes this data into meaningful hierarchies, representing assets, equipment, and processes. Seamless integration with production databases and historians ensures a comprehensive data ecosystem. Leveraging the PI AF, hydrocarbon calculations extend beyond mass balance and energy content. Operators can now compute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with hydrocarbon production. Real-time data feeds into emission factors, allowing precise estimation of CO₂, CH₄, and other emissions.

The PI System detects anomalies, such as unexpected emissions spikes or leaks. Alerts trigger notifications, enabling rapid corrective actions to mitigate environmental impact. Power BI connects seamlessly to the PI System .Dynamic dashboards and visualizations provide insights into production trends, emissions, and losses by covering a lot of parameters (40 plus for SEIPL Hazira). Operators can explore data interactively, identifying areas for optimization.

This overall helps in:-

  • Efficiency: Automation reduces manual effort, saving time and resources.
  • Accuracy: Real-time data ensures precise calculations, including GHG emissions.
  • Insights: Power BI’s interactive visuals enhance decision-making for emission reduction strategies.
  • Compliance: Streamlined regulatory reporting includes emission disclosures.

In summary, the combined power of PI AF, and Power BI revolutionizes hydrocarbon accounting. It empowers operators with actionable insights, improves efficiency, and ensures environmental responsibility in an ever-evolving industry.
