SITUATION / Business REQUIREMENT / CHALLENGE

• PTM simplification project was started to reduce complexity, duplication and cost in this  Proactive Technical Monitoring technology portfolio. The project started to migrate the 44 use cases away from the in-house developed SSP (Smart Solutions Platform) to strategic (point C) technologies like the Data and Applications platform (Mulesoft Paas, RTDIP) and market standard platforms like OSISoft’s PI System, strengthening the business cases further for the targeted technologies.

OUR STRATEGY

• Migrated 44 applications to Shell Approved Market Standard products like PI Web API and RTDIP.
• Categorized application based on  Internal or External to shell and developed the migration plan/timeline accordingly.
• Migrated applications to Pi AF Custom/Functional hierarchy base on the Pi COE approved way for working.
• Coordination with cross-functional natural teams including the direct project team members Asset SOM and Solution Architecture, but also external to the project team such as product line managers, IT managers, the PI CoE, the RTDIP Product team and wider PTX.
• Explored new technologies and Tool to migrate some critical applications ex. Tank Stock, MRTA etc.SERS to more robust and market standard products

RESULTS DELIVERED

• Net 2.2 mln dollar reduction in R&M cost (3.2 mln to ~1mln)
• Strengthened the enterprise IT landscape be removing duplication and using point C technologies like AIF MDS and RTDIP and some market standard like PI Web API and Mulesoft.  This focuses the assets on a smaller selection of technology, with wider contribution, lowering overall IT costs.
• The new support bundle, PTM Shared Components, covers key foundational aspects to the monitoring technology portfolio that aligns well with Shell’s DQ management framework and MIDS RP requirements, being central data organization through MDF, central limit management so that we all execute monitoring off the same limit references and Realtime data quality, assuring PTM engineers and disciplines that the data used in monitoring technology is up to date, correct and fit for purpose.
